Oregon’s Animal Debates

Oregon has a thing for its natural wildlife…but what happens when two of them are in conflict?

Controversy, of course.

Wildlife officials are wondering what to do about the infestation of sea lions in the Columbia River. They fear the cutesy animals could kill up to 10% of the endangered spring salmon heading downstream. They’ve tried scaring them away, setting up deterrents and other obstacles, but still no luck. The next recourse? Shooting the sea lions for doing what nature told them - catching fish!

Days may be numbered for problem sea lions

And, also, ask yourself: where else can you celebrate a birthday party for an elephant? Oregon Zoo is throwing a birthday party for Packy

This is the classic comment:

“Because they’re so cute,” says tourist Kristin Zubel. “They’re not hurting anybody and there should be plenty of fish to go around.”

This is how environmental policy ends up being determined — by the cuteness factor.
