Review:
In the trendy part of Belmont this cafe was empty when we arrived at 7am. The decor was simple and clean. The concrete benchtops gave us plenty of room to spread out.

The breakfast menu was dominated by scrambles but they were varied and sounded tasty. I went with the Baja which consisted of avocado, chorizo, tomatoes, a huge dollop of sour cream and some other goodies. It was a little light on the avocadoes but three of us ordered the same thing so portion control may have been unevenly distributed. The toast options were interesting but my oatmeal mollasses toast was a single piece and not that special. And extra slice would have been perfect.

Coffee was decent and topped up frequently, though we always seemed to be getting the bottom of the pot even though we were the only ones there.

Service was friendly and efficient.

The other items on the menu looked good and the specials were prominently displayed and interesting. Prices hovered under $8 for just about everything.

Overall, the Utopia Cafe was above average and I would go back there again to try other items on the menu. I imagine this place would be packed on weekends, but for a mid-week breakfast you have the place to yourself.

I was the odd-ball that ordered the non-conforming Bacavo Scramble (I think, either that it was called Bacada) consisting of eggs, crumbled bleu cheese, avacado and bacon. There was a good amount of avacados in my serving.

For some people it may be a bit on the salty side but I really enjoyed it, especially with the bleu cheese.

I’d go back there again but still rates second to Mother’s.
